My Gardening To-Do List
Last week during my garden tour, I shared my gardening to-do list. Today I am trying to knock the biggest item off the list.
If you are interested in the link to the Japanese hand sickle used for this project, you can check it out at the link below. The link is an Amazon affiliate link. If you told me I could only have one gardening tool, this would be the one I would pick.

My jaw dropped when you said barberry. True, deer don’t eat it and that’s why here in PA, as seeds are introduced by birds into our native woodland, it grows out of control and becomes a monoculture replacing great wildlife habitat! Barberry is also an oasis for ticks in PA. It’s important to plant a diverse native garden, not just for beauty but for functionality, providing services to wildlife. Glad you’re taking out lawn. Adding native plants will make a huge difference.

Love what you’re doing in your garden! I live in Australia and have my first ever garden after living in the city with a shade covered balcony near the ocean (not great growing conditions!) to now living on a third of an acre, where I’ve put in huge perennial borders, an orchard, a shrubbery, a potager, and a cut flower garden. It just goes to show that even at 60 years old, dreams can come true. I’ve grown most of it from cuttings and seeds. Love your channel!!!

I think a gardener is a gardener. I'm happy to listen to their experiences and learn second hand. Where I find myself drifting away is when I sense an undercurrent of deliberate 'influencing'. I'm old enough to know what I like and what I want to do. My grandfather used to say that advertising is the art of creating a need where there is none. So kudos to you, for reminding us of the basics. My limitation is time, so I've bought plants that ended up dying because I couldn't get them planted properly before the heat kicked in. For some reason, marigolds hate me. I've learned to curb my desires and work with what I have, only buying something fun or different as a treat. And I have found some lovely orphans on the Walmart clearance shelf, most famously my $2 Fiesta rose. I appreciate your thoughtful and philosophical words.

I am binge watching your videos. I love them and i have a lot of respect for you not accepting sponsored plants. I have always loved gardening and read about Gertrude Jekyll years ago. I think it's time I pick up gardening books again this winter. I have been really struggling with my age. At 59, I know i have limited springs left to see the garden burst with blooms. I have little tolerance for things like drought, bunnies eating all my zinnias, and the deer, but when i was younger, i would think...there's always next year. It is very inspiring to me to see comments from people older than me loving their gardens. Well, thanks for letting me vent in Columbus Ohio!😊

Hey ky neighbor here, I’m in the same problem your having. With this global warming crap, our summers have begun earlier and with less rain. In March April may I’m mowing twice a week to my full lush dark blue tall fescue lawn. It is also slanted on a hill and gets direct sun from 0700-6pm so in the heat like this week I’ve been watering every other day getting up at 0500 to change the sprinklers. Hi, Sue. I’ve just discovered your channel. I loved your garden tour. It looks like such a peaceful place. I was interested to hear about your use of Heuchera americana in your shady areas. I, too, have had it with those beautiful, but one-season, heuchera hybrids. My mind refuses to think of them as annuals so I can never be happy with just one season out of them. The americana is not native here in the Pacific Northwest. But years ago, I stumbled upon a plant that is native here, Tellima grandiflora, and I use it just like you use H. americana: as a filler at the front of my shady beds. The tellima has apple green foliage that contrasts beautifully with what I have near it: native sword ferns, a blue-green hosta, Acanthus spinosa, dark-leaved hellebores, a variegated rhododendron, and native trilliums. Both the tellima and a native carex (deweyana) weave around the larger things to fill any holes. They both re-seed, but politely. The tellima looks a lot like your H. americana in its leaf shape and its tall flower stems. Even after a light wind the stems are flopped over and look messy so, like you, I prune them off to restore the pleasing look of the foliage. I’m looking forward to hearing about more adventures in your garden. I’m subscribed!

    • @GardenMoxie
      @GardenMoxie 7 дней назад

Hello and thanks so much for your kind note and thanks for subscribing. Your garden sounds stunning. The Pacific Northwest is the envy of American gardeners for sure. Such a beautiful area. I am really happy with how the H. americana is growing. I have purposely not watered that area much and all the natives are thriving. One season I made the mistake of buying 12-15 Heuchera 'Fire Alarm' for my front garden. The foliage was incredible. I love all but one plant and the survivor looks like it will give up the ghost any day. What a waste of money. I have had good luck with Heuchera 'Obsidian' in my garden, but my days of buying hybrid heucheras are over. Happy gardening!

I definitely have to wear a rolled up handkerchief on my head or the sweat gets in my eyes and glasses. 😂 I was a real mess a couple days ago because the mosquitoes were SO bad I had a head net and long sleeves and was harvesting and weeding the brassicas under their bug netting. Omg, I almost cut the irrigation twice as I couldn’t see and even though the bugs couldn’t get me they were buzzing by my ear 😒. I have that same sickle and I keep storing it safe locations and I forget where I put it😅. It’s very handy when I find it. Oh the memories, I know all too well how you feel. The water view you showed looked like Grand Traverse East Bay. My husband grew up on that bay with what looks like the same view. I love your tool, must try to get one.

Hi there. The view in the video is from my Mom and Dad's house on Lake Leelanau. The sunrise was something to see coming over the lake. My Dad absolutely loved northern Michigan (understandably so).

Question about your brown paper bags from Home Depot. How well do they work for you? I would like to stop using plastic. My concern is rain. Will they hold up for weekly pickup?

I've used them and they are pretty thick. Thicker than paper grocery bags. They will hold up if it rains once-ish before trash day depending on how heavy the rain is.

They are great !!!!hold up very well if wet. No more plastic !

They are helpful. They will hold up in one to two rains

Mine definitely hold up for the weekly pick up. If they sit on the ground, they can lose the bottom if they get really wet (rainy days), but that is not common in my experience.

We use a very sturdy plastic wheeled with lid attached yard waste container..it was a bit pricey but well worth it as it should last many many years..(already had it for 4) the yard waste people can attach to the back of their truck and it’s raised and emptied..works great for us and them.

I didn’t realize those allium bulbs produce the mini ones. I will have to keep an eye on it. Where I live the spring Scilla (I think that’s what they are called ) flowers emerge just as the snow is melting. Although it produces a beautiful carpet and spreads throughout the lawns and gardens, what is not fun is removing the mini slender mini leaves and stems , as the foliage makes my gardens look very messy after the flowers die. These flowers are best for woodland areas and fields. Nature obviously found a way of implanting themselves. 🌸🇨🇦

You are right about how nature picks the best spots for plants. I was not expecting those alliums to go crazy in that bed, but as you saw, I have a mess on my hands that I have avoided for years 😂. The past 2 years I just pulled up the foliage.
